Principal's Message

Greetings STEM Family,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 2019-2020 academic year!  The amazing team of faculty and staff at STEM are excited to equip your child with the necessary skills to become a 21st Century Learner, while providing the absolute best educational experience possible.  Last year, we stayed true to our school’s theme, and we “#LeveledUp” in every possible way.  Within the classroom, our focus on increasing academic rigor while creating learning environments where all students are able to reach their full potential will continue this year.  Our efforts to make sure that STEM students have a plethora of enriching activities available to them outside of the classroom will also continue this year.  From our enriching STEM Symposiums and life-changing College Tours, to our student-led Talent Showcases and remarkable Fashion Shows; it is no wonder why STEM Academy has quickly become the “School-of-Choice” for Chester/Upland’s next generation of scholars, innovators, and influencers.

#GetInvolved is our school theme for the 2019-2020 academic year!  STEM Academy has a clear vision, but we can only achieve great results with the support of all stakeholders moving confidently in the same direction.  For this reason, I am asking everyone to #GetInvolved in some way during the 2019-20 school year.  If you are a parent, please plan on joining us during our monthly PTSA meetings so that you can “#GetInvolved” with the positive changes being created here at STEM.  If you are a student, we ask that you “#GetInvolved” by participating in the exciting extracurricular opportunities being offered during our After-School Program this year.  There are so many ways to #GetInvloved, and when we ALL do, we will see great things happen for the students at STEM and the community of Chester/Upland at large.

This year, we are also very excited about 3 major building projects happening at STEM!  Please excuse our dust as we complete the following upgrades to our building:  A 21st Century Maker’s Space & Student Lounge; A Greenhouse/Sustainable Garden Area; and A State-of-The Art TV Studio.  Once these projects are complete, these spaces will provide teachers with additional resources and tools to engage STEM students in meaningful 21st Century Instruction.  Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding while we undergo construction this Fall!

If you are new to STEM, we welcome you, and look forward to you becoming a valued part of our STEM Family.  I hope to see all STEM Families in attendance during our Back-To-School Night on Thursday, September 12th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.  You won’t want to miss this informative event that will provide you with the chance to meet & greet your child’s teachers, while also highlighting the following:

            -New STEM Mission and Goals

            -21st Century Building Initiatives

            -The STEM Curriculum

            -Academic Achievements

-The After School Program & Extra-Curricular Activities

            -College & Career Readiness

Back-to-School night is also your opportunity to gain specific knowledge about our newly revised and very informative website.  This timely form of communication will house our Student Handbook, New Policies & Procedures, Important Parent Information, Upcoming Events, Weekly Newsletters, Important Dress Code Information & Uniform Prices, Summer Reading Requirements, and Much More!  Accessibility and transparency will continue to be high on our list of priorities at STEM this year.  At Back-to-School Night you will also learn how to best contact teachers, counselors, and administrators.  Teachers will be on hand to provide you with specific examples for how you can proactively support your child’s education.

The great American Educator - Mary McLeod Bethune once said, “Believe in yourself, learn, and never stop wanting to build a better world!”  Let’s kick off this school year by believing in our power to build a better STEM.  Best wishes for a wonderful school year, and remember to #GetInvolved!

Warmly,

Dr. Jason V. Hamer
