CUSD's Annual Back-to-School Backpack Extravaganza a Huge Success

CHESTER, PA - August 29, 2024  - The Chester Upland School District (CUSD), in partnership with Making A Change Group, Parent University, The Boys and Girls Club of Chester, and Safer Schools Stronger Neighbors, proudly hosted its annual Back-to-School Backpack Extravaganza, which was a resounding success.

More than 3,000 students and families from Chester and surrounding communities participated in the event, which saw over 4,000 book bags filled with school supplies distributed to scholars just in time for the 2024/2025 school year. students stand with superintendent Dr. Mumin and Police Officer holding backpacks

"I am thrilled with the success of our Back-to-School Backpack Extravaganza,” said Dr. Latrice N. Mumin, Superintendent of Schools for CUSD. “This event truly embodies the spirit of community engagement and partnership, as we came together to support all students who attend school in Chester and the surrounding communities. It’s inspiring to see how we can achieve so much when we unite to support our scholars and families."

The event was more than just about giving away backpacks. It also featured free food, COVID-19 vaccines, and test kits, Keystone Health Van services, and a variety of children's activities, including face painting, a trackless train, and a soft play area. A live DJ kept the energy high, and 28 local organizations were on-site to provide literacy and other helpful resources and information to the community.

“It’s great to see the smiles on the students’ and parents’ faces,” said Cory Long, Founder and CEO of Making A Change Group. “This event lifts a minor burden by gifting free book bags & supplies. More importantly, it lets people know we’re here as a community to support you with your success throughout this school year!”

The success of this event was a true reflection of community collaboration and teamwork. Claudia Averette, the district’s Chief of Staff, underscored the joint effort required to bring this event to life. “I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who made it happen—our event partners Angie Johnson from The Boys and Girls Club of Chester, Cory Long with Making A Change Group, all the on-site vendors, volunteers, donors, and the community members who joined us. A special thank you also to our district’s facilities department for their outstanding support. None of this would have been possible with partnerships.”
