    Illness Procedures

We take your child's health and safety seriously. Our school nurses are here to ensure your child has the support he or she needs when ill or needs to go home for the day. Health room facilities cannot provide for the care of the sick or injured child all day. Sick or injured children need, want, and should have their parents or a family member if possible. Working parents should be prepared to leave work to care for their children or have arrangements made for someone to care for them at home.

    Please review the following procedures:

When to keep your child home

    • Your child should be fever free for 24 hours (Temperature below 100.5 degrees) without fever reducing medication before returning to school

    • Your child should not be sent to school hoping that he or she will feel better at arriving

    • Your child should be kept home following a nighttime bout of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and watched for further symptoms

    • Do not send your child to school if he/she is taking prescription pain medication

    • Strep Throat, Scarlet Fever: 24 hours after initiation of treatment

    • Please do not send your child to school with an undiagnosed rash, nausea/vomiting/diarrhea

    • Keep your child home with red itchy eyes, with drainage. Return to school from Pink eye is after 24 hours of treatment with prescribed medication from your doctor and the eye is no longer weeping

    • If your child has enlarged glands, or excessive coughing, please keep your child home

    • Communicable diseases such as Hepatitis, Meningitis, Tuberculosis, Measles, Ringworm, Impetigo, Mononucleosis, Scabies, Scarlet fever, require a written physician note for clearance to return to school

    • With chicken pox, all scabs must be dry approximately 5-7 days from onset before returning to school

    • There is no exclusion from Fifths disease (mild rash) as long as your child is fever free and feels well

    Allergic Reactions

Parents of children known to have severe allergic reactions to insects, foods, or medications must alert the school nurse. Written instructions, and in some cases, the necessary medication for emergency treatment, must be provided. Please see the medication policy page for further information regarding emergency treatment of allergies.

    Head Lice (pediculosis) Procedure

Please note our policy for pediculosis:

    • Students suspected of having head lice will be sent to the nurse for evaluation. A thorough inspection for live lice and nits will be completed.

    • If live lice are found, the student will be sent home for treatment. If no live lice are found, the student may remain in school and the parent/guardian will be notified by phone, letter or email by the end of the school day.

    • Links to the CDC, AAP and NASN websites are available on the last page of this booklet for additional reference.

    • Students can return to school following the initial treatment w/form signed by parent as proof of treatment completion. Form will be sent home with your child.

    • Wash all clothes and bed linens in hot water and dry on hot (or as hot as possible).

    • Put un-washable items in plastic bag for 10 days or place in dryer on hot for 20 minutes.

    • Vacuum carpets/furniture/car seats.

    • Parents are expected to remove all live lice before the student returns to school the next day.

    • The student will be checked in the morning by the nurse before returning to class.

    • A second treatment is required to be administered. Please refer to manufacturer's instructions: usually 7-10 days after initial treatment.

    • Please check other children and family members in the same household for evidence of pediculosis.

    First Aid Procedure

The Nurses office is staffed full time in all public schools to provide first aid and support to students who become ill or injured during the school day.
